It was a public holiday in Italy on May 1. For sure it was not called ‘Labour Day’, as most Italians were not ‘labouring’.
In fact, whenever there is a public holiday in Italy, most things come to a standstill. Save for public transport and a few eateries, everything else does not operate: the supermarkets are shut, the malls are deserted, and other individual fashion outlets, bookstores, and even tobacconists are closed.
Besides taking their holidays seriously, Italians also place a lot of importance on Sunday as a rest day.
Just like on public holidays, most of the shops/retail outlets and definitely all the supermarkets are closed. For Sunday is also the day designated by the Catholic church as the seventh day of rest, and when people should spend most parts of the day in church.
The only places that are open would be extremely popular restaurants and bars, as well as some shops in Venice for it is a tourist destination.
Other than that, we have to be aware of these unplanned breaks in our daily schedule, and stock the pantry with sufficient food.
